Measuring a LG Flat screen TV

My old tube TV eventually gave up on Monday, so off we went to Harvey Norman, JB Hi Fi and The Good Guys to have a look at what was on offer.

We found a great selection at all stores, with the The Good Guys being the best in price. We purchased a 60 inch and we went home to install the new TV. I set up the bracket up on the wall and allowed for the 60 inch with an even margin both sides of the screen. We mounted the TV and discovered it was not 60 inch at all, but only 52 inch? So we took the TV down from the wall and repackaged.

The next day we went back to The Good Guys and explained the TV was only 52 inch and not 60 inch as advertised in the store and also displayed on the packaging. The salesman we had purchased the TV then explained that the measurement is not taken from end to end like everything else in the world, but diagonally from corner to corner. So we then purchased a 65 inch that was really a 60 inch in length.

I still cannot get my head around how the diagonal measurement came about? Be careful, don't fall for this one!
